Abta: APD Increase Unnecessary

Abta: APD increase unnecessary by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Abta - The Travel Association has once again called on the British government to reconsider its plans to increase air passenger duty (APD), claiming that the move cannot be justified.
Sean Tipton, a spokesman for Abta, explained that the government has justified its planned increase in the flight tax by citing the negative environmental effects of aviation.
According to Mr Tipton, however, the amount raised by APD and the amount needed to offset the effect of aviation on the environment are very different.
"If you look at the amount of money the government raises from air passenger duty it is about £2 billion a year, which is considerably more than the cost of any environmental damage done by the industry," he said.
Mr Tipton went on to claim that the extra revenue from the increase in taxation will be used to boost the Treasury"s coffers rather than fund environmental initiatives.
Last month, Abta urged the government to follow the lead of the Dutch government and scrap APD altogether, claiming that higher taxes could damage the UK economy by discouraging people from travelling abroad.
