Macchu Pichu Celebrates Landmark Anniversaries
Macchu Pichu celebrates landmark anniversaries by Cheap Flights Booker UK
One of the world"s most iconic tourism sites, Macchu Pichu, is celebrating a pair of notable landmarks this week.
It is now 100 years since the world-famous ancient citadel was "discovered" hidden deep in the Peruvian jungle by Western archaeologists.
To mark the occasion, the mountain-top city was lit up for a special concert by the Cuzco symphony orchestra, with traditional Andean song and dance also showcased in front of a crowd of dignitaries, including tourism chiefs, politicians and UNESCO officials.
Additionally, the AFP notes that this July is also the fourth anniversary of Macchu Picchu being named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
However, the site"s long-term future is not so certain, with UNESCO warning that visitor numbers to the 15th century site need to be strongly regulated in order to ensure it is not overwhelmed.
The first westerner to set eyes on Macchu Pichu was Hiram Bingham, with the Yale professor going on to be used as the basis for the movie character Indiana Jones.
