Record January For London Heathrow
Record January for London Heathrow by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Passenger numbers at London Heathrow reached a record 5.2m in January - marking a 2.3% rise on the previous year - airport operator BAA has announced.
Above-average increases were recorded in the number of people catching flights to destinations in Europe (4.6%) and the north Atlantic (5.4%).
However, passenger traffic to China, including Hong Kong, fell by 0.7% year-on-year in January following overall growth of 3% throughout 2011.
BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said Heathrow"s statistics for travel to the Asian nation are in "marked contrast" to the strong annual growth rates at European hubs such as Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam, highlighting the need for additional capacity at the London hub.
He commented: "BAA airports have demonstrated resilience in the current weak economic environment. However, Heathrow"s capacity crunch is harming UK growth."
The company"s six UK bases - Heathrow, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen - served a total of 7.5m passengers in January 2012, 0.5% more than in the same month last year.
