Eurostar: Considerable Switch From Planes To Trains In 2008

Eurostar: Considerable switch from planes to trains in 2008 by Cheap Flights Booker UK

A "considerable switch" from air to rail travel has occurred in the past 12 months as the problems in the aviation industry began to filter through to customer choices, according to Eurostar.
The high-speed rail operator saw the busiest year in its history in 2008, with passenger numbers passing the 9m mark for the first time and ticket sales reaching £664m.
Simon Montague, director of corporate communications at Eurostar, said that the reliability and ease-of-use of modern rail services is encouraging people to consider train travel as an alternative to flying.
"Certainly we have seen a considerable switch over the last year from plane to train," he said. "The same thing has happened all over the continent.
"When high-speed railways open up, they very quickly persuade people to switch from plane to train because the service is more reliable and it"s faster city centre to city centre."
Mr Montague also pointed out that business travellers sometimes prefer rail journeys as they offer more time and space to work than short-haul flights.
According to recent research by the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), one in five Britons are hoping to get a late bargain for their break this year and only 13% of people are not intending to take a holiday in 2009.
