Abta: Gatwick also in need of new runway by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has said that Gatwick airport, as well as Heathrow, is in need of a new runway to relieve congestion.
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has welcomed the government"s decision to grant permission for a third runway at London Heathrow airport but stressed that development is also needed at Gatwick.
Heathrow currently operates at 99% of capacity, something which leaves "very little room for manoeuvre" when the airport encounters problems, according to Abta.
Mark Tanzer, the travel association"s chief executive, said that much of the criticism Heathrow has received in recent years is "directly attributable" to the fact it operates so close to capacity.
He said that a new runway would help address this problem, but investment is also needed at Gatwick to significantly improve the air travel situation in London and south-east England.
"Abta believes that demand for air travel in the UK is strongest in the south-east and its other main airport, Gatwick, is also in urgent need of a new runway and infrastructure investment."
Heathrow is one of the world"s busiest airports, with more than 67m passengers a year, while Gatwick is the UK"s second biggest air travel hub with annual passenger traffic of 35m.
