Ba Pledges To Cut Net Co2 By Half
BA pledges to cut net CO2 by half by Cheap Flights Booker UK
British Airways (BA) has set itself a goal of cutting its net carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by the year 2050.
The airline described the objective as a "radical" target that is the most ambitious set by any air carrier.
If BA achieves its ambition, it will effectively reduce its net output of carbon from 16m tonnes in 2005 to 8m by 2050.
Announcing the pledge in Hyderabad, to which BA has just opened a new route from London Heathrow, chief executive Willie Walsh said that environmental issues must not be put to one side during times of economic difficulty.
He added: "We will make progress through investment in cleaner aircraft, use of alternative fuels, more efficient flight routings and the spread of emissions trading from Europe to the whole world.
"We have taken climate change issues very seriously for a long time. More than a decade ago, we became the first airline to publish fuel efficiency targets – and we have achieved an improvement since then of almost 30%."
Commenting on the economic crisis, Mr Walsh said that the "difficult environment" in the UK is likely to last for at least another two years.
