Businesses, Unions Call For New Heathrow Runway
Businesses, unions call for new Heathrow runway by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Some of the biggest trade unions and business groups in the UK have collectively called for the government to approve plans to build a third runway at London Heathrow airport.
British Airways and bmi were involved in the joint initiative, along with the GMB and Unite unions, the Confederation of British Industry and airport operator BAA.
An advertisement was released in the national press arguing that a third runway at Heathrow is vital for employment, economic growth, investment and the competitiveness of the UK economy.
Campaign group Future Heathrow argued that the London hub is unique as it is the only airport that can provide direct flights to long-haul destinations such as China and India, which are important business locations.
Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways, said: "A third runway would be fantastic news for jobs and investment in Britain. The rest of Europe has already built extra capacity at its hub airports and will be ready to benefit when the economic recovery comes. Britain cannot afford to slip further behind."
Tim Bye, deputy chief executive of bmi, said Heathrow is "bursting at the seams and has been for many years", meaning it will lose passengers to other European airports if it is not expanded.
