Govt Supports Third Heathrow Runway
Govt supports third Heathrow runway by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The government has confirmed its support for the construction of a third runway at London Heathrow airport, which was revealed as part of a package of "major air, rail and road improvements".
Transport secretary Geoff Hoon said the government gave its approval to the new runway, but not to the introduction of mixed-mode services at the airport, which would have seen its two existing runways used more intensively.
Mr Hoon outlined measures for a number of other developments at Heathrow, including proposals for new high-speed rail lines linking London to Scotland and the West Midlands.
Announcing the government"s decision, Mr Hoon said: "Heathrow is vital to our economy. It connects us to the growth markets of the future - essential for every great trading nation. But for too long it has operated at full capacity."
He added: "This third runway will help secure jobs now and in the future and ensure that Britain remains a place where the world can come to do business."
British Airways welcomed the move, saying that the conditions being enforced by the government would allow Heathrow to "set new world standards for airport environmental performance".
The decision has not proved popular in all quarters, however, with the Green Party calling it "a breach of EU law".
