No problems reported as Esta scheme begins by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The implementation of the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (Esta) scheme took place at the beginning of the week and, contrary to some predictions, did not cause any problems at British airports.
On 12 January it became mandatory for all people visiting the United States under the visa waiver programme to have Esta approval, which must be applied for in advance.
There were concerns that a lack of awareness regarding the new regulations would lead to people being refused travel to the United States, but these proved unfounded.
A British Airways spokeswoman told the Daily Telegraph that all travellers at Heathrow airport on 12 January had Esta approval and any that did not would still have been allowed to travel.
"If anyone arrives unaware of the new system, they can still fill in the old green I-94W forms during this transition stage. But there have been no problems," the spokeswoman said.
This period of leniency is only likely to last for a few days, so travellers are urged to apply for Esta approval as far in advance of their trip to the United States as possible.
