Spain "top for Scots" in 2008 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The beach holiday hotspot of Spain was the most popular destination for sun-seeking Scots in 2008, according to new travel figures.
Airport operator BAA Scotland released statistics showing that more than 1.2m passengers flew from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports to Spanish destinations last year.
Four airports in Spain – Alicante, Malaga, Tenerife and Palma – were among the top ten flight locations from BAA"s Scottish hubs in 2008.
The Netherlands was the second most popular country for Scottish travellers, while Ireland was third and France and Germany were fourth and fifth respectively, pushing the United States into sixth place.
BAA Scotland spokesman Donald Morrison said: "It seems that Spain is as popular now with Scots as it has ever been and with the top three most popular countries unchanged from last year, you could argue that we are becoming creatures of habit.
"However, with France and Germany knocking the US - traditionally one of our most popular tourist markets - into sixth place and Norway entering the top ten for the first time, perhaps tastes are beginning to change."
New York"s Newark airport was the top long-haul destination for Scottish travellers last year, while Amsterdam was the leading single flight location.
