Concordes New Home Unveiled At Manchester Airport
Concorde"s new home unveiled at Manchester airport by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Manchester airport has officially unveiled the new eco-friendly building that will serve as a home for a Concorde aircraft.
Work on the 2,574-square-metre Concorde visitor centre began in December 2008 to provide the former British Airways flagship Concorde G-BOAC with protection from the elements.
One of the guests at the ceremony to open the facility this week was Tim Orchard, who jointly holds the world record for flying the Concorde from New York to London in two hours and 52 minutes.
The event was also attended by Geoff Muirhead CBE, chief executive of the Manchester Airport Group, and British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh.
Mr Walsh said: "Manchester airport was one of 60 high-profile locations worldwide that originally bid to give a home to a retiring Concorde.
"It gives me great pleasure to see the culmination of that bid today in this magnificent new exhibition area and visitor centre."
Manchester airport announced this month that it had become the first UK airport to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard, which was given in recognition of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
