The tourist office of Tunisia has revealed that the country is anticipating an increase in air passengers after signing up to an open skies agreement.
Achieved following years of negotiations, the deal opens up Tunisian airspace to American, European and Arabic airlines with no restrictive policies.
The agreement also included plans for a new airport at Enfidha.
Located between Hammamet and Sousse, the airport at Enfidha is set to open in late 2009 and will be the country"s ninth air hub, with a possible long-term capacity of up to 30m passengers a year.
Flights to Tunisia are currently provided by carriers including British Airways and the national airline Tunisair, but more are set to be launched as a result of the open skies initiative.
Tunisia boasts more than 700 miles of sandy beaches and is only a two-and-a-half hour flight away from the UK.
The country is located in northern Africa, a region which also includes the popular tourist destinations of Egypt and Morocco.
