Etihad targets 7m passengers by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Etihad Airways has revealed a target to carry 7m passengers in 2009, which would represent an increase in traffic of 15%.
The United Arab Emirates" national airline flew 6m people on 50 routes in 2008 and will be operating services to 55 destinations this year, using a fleet of more than 50 aircraft.
During the summer period, the carrier is planning to offer a total of 900 weekly flights, 20 per cent more than the 750 services it provided during the peak season in 2008.
Etihad"s operations this year will be boosted by the launch of new routes to Melbourne, Istanbul, Athens, Chicago and Larnaca.
James Hogan, chief executive of the airline, said: "The aviation industry is facing its toughest challenge for many years as a result of the current global economic crisis but Etihad Airways will seek to continue its expansion plans during 2009 in a measured, considered and controlled manner.
"The new aircraft arrivals will boost our fleet by a quarter and allow us to launch flights to five new destinations as well as build depth and frequency into our existing network."
Etihad recently announced a codeshare deal with Qantas that will offer travellers easier domestic connections in Australia via Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
