New Technology To Reduce Weather Delays At Heathrow
New technology "to reduce weather delays at Heathrow" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
British Airways (BA) is today (25 March) introducing the new onboard Microwave Landing System, which is designed to reduce flight delays and disruption caused by fog and poor visibility at London Heathrow.
The £5m technology setup has been installed on 29 of the carrier"s Airbus A320 and A321 planes and will be launched on a further 12 aircraft before the end of the year.
On average, there are ten foggy days a year at Heathrow, necessitating a reduction in aircraft landings that leads to delays, diversions and cancellations.
The Microwave Landing System is expected to increase the safe landing rate during periods of low visibility by more than 20%.
Captain Stephen Riley, BA"s director of flight operations, said: "This pioneer initiative will mean less disruption and congestion, which is great news for our customers.
"It will also reduce holding times for aircraft, which will cut unnecessary carbon emissions."
BA recently joined with other carriers including Virgin Atlantic and Cathay Pacific to call for aviation emissions to be included in a new global initiative on climate change.
