Eurostar Reports Increased Leisure Sales
Eurostar reports increased leisure sales by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Eurostar has announced that it saw a year-on-year increase of 2.2% in leisure sales in the first quarter, even though there were only five weeks of full service operation in the period.
Capacity was restricted in the Channel Tunnel from September 2008 up to 23 February this year following a fire, a factor which contributed to a decrease of 5.8% in overall sales in the first quarter.
While business sales were down as a result of the operating restrictions and the economic downturn, Eurostar reported higher interest in travel from France and Belgium as a result of the favourable exchange rate.
Following the resumption of a full timetable through the tunnel, the high-speed rail operator achieved punctuality of 96% up to the end of March.
Richard Brown, chief executive of Eurostar, said: "The downturn may be depressing business travel but it is having the opposite effect on the leisure market, with more people wanting to get away from it all to relax, recharge the batteries and spend time with loved ones.
"Our recently commissioned research shows travellers want transparent pricing and good value fares when they"re researching leisure breaks. They are fed up with extra charges, and they want the industry to be more honest about the real cost of travel."
The rail provider recently released a study showing that 68% of adults plan to take a holiday this year, compared to 65% in 2008.
