The Skylink bus service at East Midlands airport has become a more popular transport option over the past year, it has been announced.
Passenger numbers on the bus link were 13% higher between April 2008 and March this year than in the previous 12-month period, the airport revealed.
This trend is thought to have saved around 1,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide compared to single occupancy car travel, enough to provide energy to some 1,500 homes for a year.
Skylink buses currently run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, linking East Midlands airport to Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, Loughborough and Coalville.
Kelly McHugh, the bus company"s marketing manager at East Midlands, said: "Skylink"s 24-hour operation and 30 minutes daytime frequency is helping to drive the impressive passenger growth and demonstrates that passengers are embracing public transport to travel to the airport.
"Our greatest achievement has been a 22% increase on the Derby and Loughborough Skylink, which has recently changed to a 24-hour service. We have also seen many more families using the Skylink services in the last year, due to the introduction of a £10 family return ticket."
Bmi, Eastern Airways and easyJet are among the carriers that fly from East Midlands airport, offering summer services to destinations including Paris, Barcelona, Rome and Corfu.
