The £660,000 campaign will focus on the weak value of the pound in the current economic climate and invite Americans to "get more Britain for your buck" throughout 2009.
A new dedicated website has been launched to support the initiative, as well as competitions and online advertising campaigns.
Simon Bradley, Visit Britain"s regional director for the Americas, said: "With Virgin Atlantic Airways, we"ve got some red hot deals and red hot destinations that Americans are sure to enjoy.
"2009 is the year they can explore Scotland as it celebrates Homecoming, play the 2010 Ryder Cup golf course and take advantage of the many festivals and cultural events taking place across the country."
The United States is one of British tourism"s most important source markets, with Americans taking some 3m trips to the UK every year and spending around £2.2bn.
Overseas visitors will be informed of the unique experiences they can enjoy in London this year through a new campaign being launched by the city"s tourism agency.
