London visitors enjoy a game of "paille maille" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Tourists visiting London were today (16 June) invited to participate in a special recreation of a 17th century game that gave Pall Mall, the famous street in central London, its name.
For the first time in 400 years, a game of "paille maille" was played on Pall Mall in the shadow of Buckingham Palace, with London visitors and locals invited to take part.
The game is similar to croquet and takes its name from the Italian word "pallamaglio", which literally means "ball-mallet".
Today"s event was arranged by Visit London as part of its "Only in London" promotional campaign, which is designed to highlight the unique experiences on offer in the capital.
Sally Chaterjee, chief executive of the tourism agency, said: "One of the things that makes London such a unique city is its rich history and heritage.
"[By] revealing the street stories of London and the re-enactment of paille maille, we want to celebrate the unusual and world-famous heritage of London"s streets, bringing them back to life in a really fun and engaging way."
It was recently revealed that visitor numbers at London attractions rose by 20% to 3.6m in April this year.
