UK flights more punctual this year by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The punctuality of flights from UK airports improved in the first quarter of 2009, according to new figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
Ten of the busiest air travel hubs in the UK were monitored by the CAA between January and March, all of which achieved improvements in their punctuality.
Overall on-time performance - which is defined as early to 15 minutes late - increased from the 70% recorded in the first quarter of 2008 to 81% this year.
The biggest improvements of all were noted at London Heathrow and London City, which achieved year-on-year increases of 20% and 18% respectively in their rates of punctuality.
Heathrow halved its average delay from 24 minutes to 12 minutes, while London City managed to reduce hold-ups to an average of nine minutes.
Outside London, Edinburgh airport was one of the best performers in the first quarter of the year, with an increase of 12% in its on-time performance and a six-minute reduction in its average delay.
The CAA also surveyed flights to 75 of the most popular scheduled and charter destinations, finding that flights to Rotterdam had the highest punctuality rate of 91%.
