The Australian tourist attractions of the Great Barrier Reef and Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru, have reached the final stage of a campaign to name the seven wonders of the natural world.
A total of 77 nominees were put forward for the New7Wonders of Nature campaign, from which 28 finalists were chosen by a panel of experts headed by Federico Mayor, former director-general of Unesco.
Rick Allert, executive chairman of Tourism Australia, said the country should be proud that two of its natural wonders have made the final list.
He added: "A place among the ultimate New7Wonders of Nature would be a stunning achievement for our nation"s iconic natural wonders and we thank everyone who has played a part in ensuring Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef have made it through to this third and final stage, still in the running for the ultimate accolade."
Other locations in with a chance of being named one of the seven wonders of the natural world include Table Mountain in South Africa, the Grand Canyon in the US and Milford Sound in New Zealand.
Members of the public can vote on their favourite sites before the final announcement is made by the New7Wonders Foundation in 2011.
