Online check-in facilities are being widely promoted and used more often as they offer mutual benefits for airlines and passengers, according to a consultancy firm.
Mark Entwistle, divisional director at retail and consumer consultancy Pragma, said that airlines make "substantial savings" through online check-in as it removes the need for desk staff at the airport.
He also said that the web option makes life easier for passengers and is becoming increasingly familiar to large portions of the consumer market.
"It ultimately gives customer satisfaction a boost as people are not standing in long queues at check-in," Mr Entwistle explained.
"People are getting used to checking in online because you pretty much have to do it with all the low-cost airlines."
The Pragma spokesman also gave the example of Virgin Atlantic, which is promoting online check-in by offering duty-free vouchers to customers who make use of the facility.
Running until 31 August this year, the initiative will offer £6 off the airline"s duty-free shopping range for people traveling from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow airports.
