Virgin Atlantic: Govt tax increases out of control by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Virgin Atlantic has launched another attack on the government for its plans to increase air passenger duty (APD), saying that the aviation tax rises are already "out of control".
The government plans to implement tax hikes of up to 113% by November 2010, with some increases coming into effect this year.
Virgin Atlantic warned that the negative effects of these changes would reach further than the UK, with developing regions such as the Caribbean and Africa also expected to suffer.
As part of its campaign against the tax increases, the airline has started issuing e-tickets that encourage passengers to protest to their local MP.
Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic, said there was no evidence to suggest the government is using the increased tax revenue to fund environmental projects, as it has claimed.
He added: "Now the UK government wants to again hike the ridiculously high tax on your holiday or business trip - in November this year and next - by up to 113%. I am urging passengers to write to their local MP on why the planned increases are out of control."
The airline has also criticised plans for a merger between British Airways and American Airlines, saying that the deal would disadvantage rival carriers and passengers alike.
