A surge in the late bookings market will see some 1.9m British people take overseas trips over the forthcoming August bank holiday weekend, according to Abta.
The travel association revealed that beach destinations have been the priority among holidaymakers hoping to escape the poor weather at home, with mainland Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey among the most popular countries.
City break hotspots such as Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin have also been proving popular, along with leading destinations in the US such as Los Angeles, New York and Orlando.
Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester airports are expected to see the highest passenger numbers over the long weekend, while some 70,000 people are set to use Eurostar high-speed rail links to reach the continent.
Abta chairman John McEwan said: "Many families see the bank holiday as their last ditch attempt to get a holiday abroad to get some guaranteed sunshine. This is more true this year than ever.
"Obviously people have been holding onto their money until they are sure they have enough to go away with and as a result we have seen a surge in late bookings."
The travel association recently encouraged travellers to write to their local MP or sign an online petition opposing the government"s plans to raise air passenger duty.
