Premium Economy Seats May Be Over
Premium economy seats "may be over" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Increasing the Air Passenger Duty (APD) could mean that premium economy seats will be phased out, travel experts have warned.
ABTA - The Travel Association said that the tax was once seen as a measure to boost environmentally friendly practices in the aviation industry.
However, the organisation added that it had not seen the government use the levy to invest in green projects.
"Tour operators and airlines have said that because premium economy gives extra space for people who are tall at a knock down price, it is going to be taxed at a similar rate to business class and first class sections of the aircraft," a spokeswoman for the industry body explained.
"Pricing people out of that premium economy section, tour operators and airlines feel that they may have to get rid of premium economy as a whole."
The APD is due to rise in November, from when it will operate in four bands. Rates will depend on how far the airline is flying from London and will be adjusted for every 2,000 miles.
