Uncertainty in the employment market has led to a rising interest in taking time out of work to travel among older people, according to research.
The impact of the recession on the job market has created a new generation of "grown-up gappers" - older people taking time out of work to go travelling, according to research.
Foreign exchange firm Travelex questioned over 4,000 people who had been made redundant and found that one in ten view the recession as a positive opportunity.
More than three quarters (78%) plan to take some time out to travel, 63% of whom are aged between 30 and 55, compared to 32% of the 18 to 24 age group.
Nearly a third (30%) of people who are planning to go travelling intend to visit Canada, making it the most popular destination, followed by Japan, Hawaii, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Travelex director Peter Davies said: "Combined with strong commercial demand, our recent research highlights that the "grown-up gap year" is a rapidly growing market, with many people opting for an extended break to destinations that they may not have visited in their youth."
The foreign exchange company expanded its presence in the US recently by opening ten new branches across the country.
