Facial recognition gates in use at Bristol airport by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Travellers flying back to Bristol airport after holidays abroad have been encouraged to make use of new facial recognition gates that have been installed at the base.
The machines work by scanning passengers" faces and comparing the image to their passport photo.
According to Bristol airport, the technology will increase both security and efficiency at arrivals points and also provide legitimate passengers with a smooth return through the UK"s border.
The gates have proved successful during trials at Manchester and Stansted airports, with over 500,000 passengers making use of the service.
Alison Roberts, terminal manager at Bristol airport, said: "In the long-term we aim to increase the space available for immigration control, and our development plans include proposals to extend the existing terminal building to reduce bottlenecks in this area.
"However, the use of new technology can help improve today"s passenger experience, providing a positive first impression to visitors arriving in the UK."
Lin Homer, chief executive of the UK Border Agency, said the gates at Bristol will "improve our service to the public and help to make the UK safer".
The facial recognition system can be used by anyone over the age of 18 with a new biometric passport, more than 17m of which have been issued since 2006.
