Heathrow Experiences Busiest Ever August
Heathrow experiences busiest ever August by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Airport operator BAA has released figures showing that London Heathrow experienced its busiest ever August this year.
The London hub handled some 6.4m passengers during the month, an increase of 0.3% on the previous year.
A strong leisure market and Heathrow"s "powerful network of international routes" fuelled the growth, BAA said.
Colin Matthews, chief executive of the operator, said: "Heathrow"s traffic performance in July and August was good. The airport benefits from being the hub of a strong international route network, which is important both socially and economically.
"However, industry conditions remain difficult. A continuation of the improving trend at Heathrow depends on business travellers re-establishing face-to-face contact with global markets."
At London Gatwick, domestic traffic increased by 1.2% and European scheduled flights carried 5.6% more travellers, while Edinburgh airport"s figures were up for the fifth consecutive month, with a 4.8% rise in passenger numbers.
Overall, BAA"s seven UK airports handled a total of 14.4m passengers in August, a 3.1% fall on the previous year.
