The New Zealand tourism industry enjoyed a strong winter season this year, new figures show.
Holiday arrivals from Australia and a healthy ski sector were among the factors that boosted the industry, Tourism New Zealand revealed.
Figures released by Statistics New Zealand show that arrivals from Australia were up by 28% over the winter season of June, July and August this year compared to the same period in 2008.
Visits from Australia to New Zealand were also found to be 2% higher during the winter period than in the peak 2007-08 summer months of December, January and February.
George Hickton, chief executive of Tourism New Zealand, said: "The recession and a combined New Zealand marketing push in Australia has resulted in this winter season outstripping summer arrivals in 2007-08 and that is something we could not have foreseen given the current economic downturn."
The tourism agency recently launched a new campaign aiming to encourage more backpackers to visit New Zealand.
