London City marks "major milestone"
London City airport has celebrated a "major milestone" today (29 September) with the launch of its first long-haul service.
British Airways" business class flights to New York from London City will operate twice a day using two uniquely configured Airbus A318s.
Passengers will be able to send emails and text messages and use the internet on the new service, which will also provide the option to clear US customs and immigration checks during a refuelling stop at Shannon in Ireland.
Richard Gooding, chief executive of the airport, said: "Providing long-haul services for the first time out of London City is a major milestone in the history of the airport.
"New York is the most demanded destination not currently served from London City. The new route is a key growth opportunity for us and demonstrates the premium nature of London City airport."
Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways, said London"s financial district now has "a tailor-made premium service to New York on its doorstep".
