Birmingham Airport Can Help Solve Heathrow Problem
Birmingham airport "can help solve Heathrow problem" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Authorities at Birmingham airport have claimed that the West Midlands hub can provide a solution to the capacity problems at London Heathrow.
Following proposals to build a new airport in the Thames Estuary, Birmingham bosses said the gateway can provide a "more efficient, much less costly and practically instantaneous way" to reduce congestion and pressure at the London hub.
If the two airports were linked by high-speed rail, it would reportedly be quicker to take the train from London to Birmingham than to walk from one side of Heathrow to the other.
The West Midlands gateway has the capacity to handle an extra 9m passengers a year and could incorporate south-east traffic as part of its "wider portfolio", bosses said.
Paul Kehoe, chief executive officer of Birmingham airport, commented: "Birmingham is ready to respond to any current or future government initiatives. We already attract passengers from the home counties who choose the convenience, choice and accessibility of Birmingham over other alternatives.
"We have plenty of capacity and, linked to high-speed rail, we are uniquely positioned to not only claw back people from our own region, who make the long journey to Heathrow, but to attract passengers from the overheated south-east."
