Continental Airlines has moved one step closer towards joining the Star Alliance group.
The US carrier has entered into commercial agreements with the 24 airlines which are already part of the network.
As a result, passengers on any of these airlines will now be able to redeem frequent flyer miles on any of the other Star Alliance members.
In addition, Continental has signed codeshare agreements with four other airlines: United Airlines, bmi, Air Canada and Lufthansa.
Larry Kellner, chairman and chief executive of Continental Airlines, said: "Since making the strategic decision 16 months ago to join Star Alliance, Continental has been intensely focused on making preparations for this change.
"For our customers, the change will be seamless and will deliver significantly improved travel opportunities."
Continental is currently the world"s fifth largest carrier and operates flights to 130 US and 132 international destinations.
The airline is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
