Gatwick Sale Receives Cautious Welcome From Flybe
Gatwick sale receives "cautious welcome" from Flybe by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Flybe has given a "cautious welcome" to the news that BAA is selling London Gatwick to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) for £1.51 billion.
The sale, which is part of the break-up of BAA"s airport network ordered earlier this year by the Competition Commission, is set to be finalised in December.
As the biggest domestic carrier at Gatwick, Flybe called on the hub"s new owners to focus on its "core business" of short-haul and European flights.
Mike Rutter, the airline"s chief commercial officer, said that the airport plays a "crucial role" in connecting London to regional destinations in the UK and providing access to popular locations in Europe.
"GIP would be making a fatal mistake if they try and chase trophy airlines promising glamorous long-haul destinations," he added.
"That"s not the future - Gatwick"s growth lies with efficient, environmentally sensitive, well-managed and stable airlines like Flybe."
Mr Rutter also said that he looks forward to Gatwick losing its reputation as an expensive airport for carriers, pointing out that the charges imposed by BAA were some of the highest in the industry.
