New Wing Devices Saving Fuel For Air New Zealand
New wing devices saving fuel for Air New Zealand by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Air New Zealand has revealed that its new blended winglets are saving 19% more fuel than had initially been forecast.
The devices, which are being fitted to the airline"s fleet of Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, are 3.4 metres in height and are used to make the wing more efficient by reducing drag, consequently lowering fuel use and carbon emissions.
Initially, the carrier expected the strategy to save more than 6m litres of fuel every year.
However, with four aircraft now fitted with the winglets, that prediction has been upped by 19% to over 7m litres, which equates to 18,400 tonnes of carbon emissions being avoided annually.
Captain David Morgan, Air New Zealand"s general manager of airline operations, said: "The installation of the blended winglets is part of Air New Zealand"s ongoing drive to be the world"s most environmentally sustainable airline.
"Our approach is constantly evolving as we continue to evaluate our operations and identify new opportunities and new technologies."
The final aircraft being fitted with the devices is due to return to service in early November.
