See the "small five" in New Zealand by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Travellers with a passion for wildlife have been invited to look out for the "small five" during a trip to New Zealand.
Inspired by Africa"s "big five", the phrase describes some of the country"s rarest indigenous creatures - the kiwi, Hector"s dolphin, yellow-eyed penguin, kea and tuatara.
The kea is a species of parrot found on New Zealand"s South Island and the tuatara is the only beak-headed reptile left in the world.
Tourism New Zealand is cooperating with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to boost interest in wildlife and attract more visitors to locations such as Milford Sound, the Mount Bruce Native Bird Reserve and Ulva Island.
DOC spokeswoman Nicola Vallance said: "There are lots of opportunities for visitors to experience these five unique New Zealand species in their natural environment.
"But why stop at five? New Zealand is internationally recognised as a "conservation hotspot" and there are hundreds of special animals and plants that you will only ever experience by coming here."
Nearly a third of New Zealand"s land has been designated as national park or reserve territory to protect the country"s natural heritage.
