Yellowstone National Park in the US saw record visitor numbers in September, it has been revealed.
Nearly 490,000 people visited the park, an increase of 12% on September 2008 and well above the previous record for the month of 468,060 set in 1995.
Visitor numbers at the attraction for the first nine months of the year have now topped the 3m mark for the first time.
If just over 7,500 more tourists head to Yellowstone before the end of 2009, the park will break its previous annual visitation record of 3.15m people set two years ago.
July is traditionally the peak month for the attraction, followed by August, June, September and May.
Located in the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, Yellowstone is America"s oldest national park, having been founded in 1872.
It is home to wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, bison and elk, as well as geographical features such as the geyser Old Faithful and several hot springs.
