Abta to address APD this week by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Abta has revealed that it will be using the World Travel Market this week as an opportunity to address the issue of air passenger duty (APD), the flight tax that was increased by the British government this month.
The travel association will be discussing lobbying strategies with tourism representatives from some of the destinations expected to be most affected by the tax increase, such as South Africa, Kenya and the Caribbean.
As well as having an impact on foreign tourism industries, the APD rise will put families at a disadvantage as they struggle to deal with the impact of the recession, according to Abta.
Chief executive Mark Tanzer said the tax hikes will "put pressure on jobs and damage local economies".
He added: "They will place an even greater financial burden on families and others on tight budgets as they book their holidays or visits to friends and family. They will undo a lot of the good work being done by the industry to keep prices at an affordable level."
Travellers hoping to stick to a budget during Christmas breaks this year were recently advised by Abta to book early to get the best prices.
