EasyJet Calls For New Aircraft Emissions Standards

EasyJet calls for new aircraft emissions standards by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Low-cost airline easyJet has called for the introduction of mandatory emissions standards that would achieve a 40% reduction in carbon dioxide output from the next generation of planes.

The carrier suggested that every new aircraft type should meet strict environmental criteria by 2015.

By 2024, airlines would not be able to make new additions to their fleet unless the planes met the required standard under easyJet"s proposals.

Andy Harrison, chief executive of the company, said that aviation needs a "global solution" and argued that the government"s main strategy, to raise taxes, will not create a sustainable industry.

He added: "If we get cleaner aircraft and ground the old smokers we can reduce the industry"s overall emissions and tackle climate change head on.

"Since most aircraft are manufactured in Europe and America, tough emissions standards at the manufacturing source will deliver the global environmental benefits as these aircraft are exported to the fast growing markets of China and India."

Environment ministers and world leaders will gather in Copenhagen next month with the aim of reaching a new global agreement on climate change.
