Southampton airport has announced that its winter season is now officially underway, offering travellers a choice of 49 destinations in the UK, the Channel Islands and Europe.

One of the biggest users of the south coast hub is Flybe, which recently introduced a year-round service to Avignon in France to reflect strong demand from travellers.

The carrier also provides options for people looking forward to skiing holidays over the coming months, with flights to Geneva, Chambery and Salzburg offering access to leading resorts in Switzerland, France and Austria.

Travellers hoping to enjoy some winter sun this year can fly to popular hotspots including Alicante, Malaga and Bergerac from Southampton.

Kevin Brown, managing director of the airport, said: "The launch of more new routes this year is fantastic news for the region"s travellers.

"There are now 49 destinations on offer from Southampton travelling throughout the UK, Channel Islands and Europe. So whether you"re looking for business flights, a city break or to sample the ski slopes, there really is something for everyone."

The domestic network available from Southampton includes flights to Durham Tees Valley in the north-east, which were recently launched by Eastern Airways.
