Most Brits "use cash overseas" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The majority of British people travelling abroad favour cash as their primary method of paying for goods and services, a new survey reveals.
Santander carried out a poll which found that 51% of all Britons took an overseas holiday in 2009, just over half (52%) of whom made most of their purchases using cash.
A fifth (20%) of people used a credit card during their holiday, according to the bank"s survey, while 15% relied mainly on debit cards.
The research also indicated a dramatic reduction in the use of traveller"s cheques, with only 5% of travellers saying this was their primary method of payment.
Vim Maru, director of retail products for Santander UK, said: "Some may find this research surprising - with so many Britons relying on cash when they are abroad and the once ubiquitous traveller"s cheque only as popular as the foreign currency account."
Santander recently announced that it was making all 4,300 of its ATMs in Spain free for its bank account customers in the UK.
The company owns the high street financial services brands Alliance & Leicester, Abbey and Bradford & Bingley.
