Continental Airlines has confirmed it will not impose a penalty on travellers affected by poor weather in the New York area.

The carrier said that passengers on services to, from or via Newark Airport can change their itinerary without paying change fees.

"Weather conditions are expected to make air travel difficult, forcing some delays and cancellations of flights at Newark Liberty International Airport," Continental explained.

Travellers with bookings for today (16 February) can avail the exemption as long as they make only one change to the date or time of their flights.

A refund will be given to those passengers whose flights have been cancelled altogether. This will be provided in the original form of payment.

"The fastest and most convenient way to change travel plans is via continental.com," the airline added.

"Customers should enter their confirmation number and last name in "Manage Reservations"."
