Gatwick Will Compete To Become Airport Of Choice
Gatwick "will compete to become airport of choice" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
London Gatwick has revealed that it is hoping to become the "airport of choice" for travellers and airlines during the coming year.
Figures were released showing that Gatwick handled 2.12m passengers in December last year, representing a 1.5% increase from 2008.
The strongest growth was recorded on European scheduled flights, which carried 14.5 per cent more travellers from Gatwick during the month.
Some 32.37m people used the airport throughout 2009, marking a 5.3% reduction from the previous year.
Stewart Wingate, chief executive officer at London Gatwick, said: "I am pleased to end the year with a third consecutive month of growth in passenger numbers, which demonstrates that Gatwick airport is recovering well from the economic downturn.
"While overall annual passenger numbers were lower than in 2008, the newly independent Gatwick airport will compete strongly to become the airport of choice for airlines and passengers in 2010 and beyond."
Gatwick was sold by BAA to Global Infrastructure Partners, which also owns London City airport, in December last year.
