Iceland"s national tourist board has announced that the country attracted a record number of visitors from the UK in January.
The latest figures released by the Icelandic Tourist Board show that 4,312 people from the UK travelled to the destination last month, 11.6% more than the 3,865 recorded in January 2009.
Iceland welcomed more than 61,600 British tourists throughout the whole of last year, making the UK the biggest customer market for the country.
Sigga Groa Porarinsdottir, UK and Ireland marketing manager of the Icelandic Tourist Board, said: "Despite the economic downturn, Iceland continues to be a popular destination for British holidaymakers year-round."
She added: "2009 was a challenging year for Iceland but these figures are very encouraging and there is further cause for optimism as visitors will soon have a greater range of travel options, not only from the UK but also within Iceland."
Icelandair recently doubled the frequency of its services to the country from Manchester and Glasgow.
Travellers can also catch flights to Reykjavik from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports.
