The Middle East region has become increasingly appealing to travellers recently and looks set to maintain the trend this year, according to Lonely Planet.

Tom Hall, the company"s travel editor, pointed out that European holidaymakers are showing an appreciation for the fact that they can fly for just five or six hours and experience "radically different" cultures and ways of life.

Once people have had a taste of Middle Eastern culture, they often want to return and do more, according to Mr Hall.

"Middle Eastern countries do have a strong pull for European travellers because they do offer an adventure, genuine hospitality and incredible history," he said.

"As far as the perception of safety or otherwise, maybe they"ve been off people"s list for the past few years and people are starting to feel that maybe it"s a good time to return to Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Israel."

The Lonely Planet travel editor recommended Jordan as "a good place to start" for Brits planning to visit the Middle East.

Attractions in the country include the archaeological site of Petra and the beaches at Al Aqabah.
