New Zealand Sees Higher Tourist Spending In 2009
New Zealand sees higher tourist spending in 2009 by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Travellers visiting New Zealand last year continued to show a willingness to spend money despite the global financial crisis, new government figures reveal.
International visitors spent some NZ$6.2bn (£2.8bn) during 2009, representing an increase of 4% from the previous year.
Tourists from China and Germany spent more on trips to New Zealand last year, while Australia was singled out as the "star performer", with visitors from this country forking out a total of NZ$1.8bn - 11.6% more than in 2008.
Ray Salter, general manager of the New Zealand tourism ministry, said: "The level of spending for 2009 was an excellent result considering the raft of challenges faced during the year, from the global financial crisis through to the influenza pandemic mid-year.
"Once again the tourism industry has adapted to the conditions and has done a great job in keeping tourism activity and spending at such high levels."
Travellers can catch flights to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and other destinations in the country with carriers such as Air New Zealand, Emirates and Cathay Pacific.
