Ms Tuke went on to refer to the festivities that take place in Greece every year, pointing out that the country sees Easter as a "major festival".

The Abta spokeswoman also highlighted the value for money on offer in European destinations, with prices in Spain having dropped recently as the country attempts to compete with non-euro nations such as Egypt and Turkey.

For those looking beyond Europe, Ms Tuke recommended the Caribbean and Florida as good bets for avoiding the school holiday rush.
