Travel to Tunisia is set to "soar" this year following the opening of the country"s seventh airport, the national tourist board has predicted.
The introduction of Enfidha Zine El Abidine Ben Ali airport in Sousse will reaffirm the African country"s status as a "top holiday hotspot for 2010", according to the Tunisian National Tourism Office.
Located in the north-east of the country on the Mediterranean coast, the 6,500-hectare site features a number of technological and design innovations intended to boost the efficiency of its operations.
Test flights have suggested that the airport will offer aircraft turnaround times of about 50 minutes.
Enfidha is expected to handle around 7m passengers per year, with long-term capacity potentially increasing to 30m travellers.
Holidaymakers can travel to the airport to visit popular destinations such as the historic cities of Sousse, which is also a popular beach resort, and Monastir.
Travellers can also catch flights to Tunis, the country"s capital city, with British Airways, Air France and other carriers.
