Carmen Hernandez Gomez, a market analyst at the Spanish Tourism Office, said the regularity with which holidaymakers return to the country has created a sense of familiarity.

While many people appreciate the peace of mind that comes with this, Ms Gomez pointed out that holidays can be more fulfilling if visitors are willing to be open-minded and try new things.

"Even if you have been to a place many, many times, there is probably a lot about it that you don"t know yet," she said.

"Go there with an open mind and ask the locals what to do, don"t just stay in the hotel."

Ms Gomez revealed that there has been a drop in "sun and sea" visitors to Spain recently, with an increasing number of travellers coming to try local cuisine.

The Spanish Tourism Office is currently focusing on raising the profile of the country"s food to compete with more established culinary destinations such as Italy and France.
