Volcano Tourism Proving Popular In Iceland
"Volcano tourism" proving popular in Iceland by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The recent eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull mountain in Iceland has led to a rise in the popularity of "volcano tourism" in the country, the national tourist board has revealed.
Eyjafjallajokull is located 75 miles east of Reykjavik along the Fimmvorduhals ridge, which is one of the country"s most popular summer hiking trails.
The volcano erupted on 20 March after lying dormant for almost 200 years, leading a number of companies to begin offering tours for people who want to see the spectacle first-hand.
Iceland was proving popular among travellers before the event, with a record number of visitors from the UK in January and a 25.6% year-on-year increase in February.
Sigga Groa Porarinsdottir, marketing manager for the UK and Ireland at the Icelandic Tourist Board, said: "Despite the economic downturn, Iceland continues to be a popular destination for British holidaymakers year-round.
"Iceland still has an advantageous exchange rate compared with the euro, which means there has never been a better time for people to visit Iceland with UK travellers" spending money going a lot further."
Flights to Reykjavik are available from London Heathrow, Manchester and Glasgow airports with Icelandair.
