2010 "the year of the experience holiday" by Cheap Flights Booker UK

If 2009 was the year of the "staycation", then 2010 will be the year of the "experience holiday", according to car hire firm Avis Europe.

The company carried out a survey which found that more than a third of British travellers would prefer to take a trip that is based around more than one type of activity this year.

Almost a fifth of respondents said they are planning an adventure or sporting holiday, while 13% are opting for a break with a cultural or educational theme.

Nick Mountfield, head of marketing for Avis UK, said: "In 2009 we saw many consumers opting to holiday in their own country, but now we are seeing signs of economic stabilisation, leisure travellers are once again looking to explore foreign shores."

He added: "While traditional beach and city breaks are still proving popular, a significant number of travellers are looking to make more of their time away by either taking in more venues at their chosen destination or undertaking more fulfilling activities during their break."

The survey also highlighted the importance of flexibility for modern travellers, with 84% of people choosing to travel independently to enjoy more freedom.
