Celebrity Eclipse, one of the latest additions to the Celebrity Cruises fleet, is to sail to Spain on a "repatriation mission", the company has confirmed.
The first leg of the vessel"s launch celebrations has been cancelled to allow the ship to travel to Spain to pick up British and Irish passengers who are stranded following the closure of large parts of European airspace over the past five days.
Due to depart from Southampton this evening (20 April), Celebrity Eclipse is scheduled to arrive in Bilbao on the north coast of Spain in the early hours of 22 April.
Richard D Fain, chairman of Celebrity Cruises, said: "The events affecting air travel are completely unprecedented and it is in times like these that the global travel industry needs to pull together.
"Collecting stranded British and Irish vacationers is a fitting first mission for new ship Celebrity Eclipse - what better way for a ship dedicated to the UK to mark her arrival?"
In its latest update on the air travel situation following the eruption of a volcano in Iceland last week, National Air Traffic Services said flights from certain locations in the UK, including Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Newcastle, will be available this evening and early tomorrow morning.
